A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hirosada, featuring two Kabuki actors in detailed costume from the mid-nineteenth century.
This woodblock print originates from the Kamigata region, specifically Osaka, where Utagawa Hirosada was a primary figure in the production of actor prints during the mid-nineteenth century. Unlike the larger, more stylised prints from Edo, Osaka prints often feature a distinct focus on the specific facial expressions and characterisations of Kabuki actors. This diptych captures two figures in traditional costume, rendered with the precise line work and flat colour application characteristic of the period.
The left panel depicts an actor in a female role, adorned with elaborate floral hair ornaments and a patterned kimono. The right panel shows a male actor holding a sword, his expression conveying the intensity typical of the aragoto or wagoto performance styles. The use of bokashi, or colour gradation, is visible in the background, providing a subtle depth to the composition without disrupting the two-dimensional quality of the print. The inclusion of calligraphic text, likely identifying the actors or the specific play, integrates the literary and visual elements common to the Ukiyo-e tradition.
Hirosada, also known as Konishi Hirosada, was active during a period when the Osaka print market flourished despite strict government regulations. His work provides a record of the theatrical culture of the time, documenting the costumes, makeup, and dramatic poses that defined the Kabuki stage. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with the artist to produce these small-format works. These prints were often collected in albums, serving as souvenirs for theatre-goers or as records for enthusiasts of the dramatic arts. The preservation of these colours and the clarity of the woodblock impressions offer a view into the aesthetic preferences of the Osaka merchant class during the late Edo period.
