A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicting the kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan II beneath a weeping cherry tree.
This woodblock print originates from an album featuring forty-eight depictions of kabuki actors, a genre known as yakusha-e. Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was a prolific designer of these prints during the Edo period. His work captures the theatricality of the kabuki stage, focusing on the expressive gestures and costumes of the performers.
The composition shows an actor, identified as Nakamura Shikan II, in a dramatic pose beneath a weeping cherry tree. The artist employs a balanced use of negative space, allowing the pale background to contrast with the dark, heavy robes of the actor. The cherry blossoms provide a delicate, seasonal frame for the figure, suggesting a specific narrative moment from a play. Kunisada uses clear, defined lines to delineate the actor's facial features and the folds of his garments, maintaining the stylistic conventions of the Utagawa school.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the woodblock medium. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of red, black, and soft pink to create a sense of harmony. The inclusion of a cartouche containing the actor's name is a standard feature of this format, providing context for the viewer. This print offers a glimpse into the popular culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where actors were celebrated figures and their likenesses were collected by fans of the theatre. The work reflects the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Kunisada to produce these images for a wide audience.
