This work is a leaf from an album of compositions by Wang Gai, a painter active during the early Qing Dynasty. Wang Gai is widely recognised for his contribution to the 'Jieziyuan Huazhuan' (Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting), a pedagogical text that codified techniques for generations of artists. His approach to the brush reflects a mastery of traditional ink methods, prioritising the rhythmic quality of the line and the balance of negative space.
The scene depicts a solitary figure navigating a small boat beneath a wooden bridge. The composition is framed by dense, skeletal trees that suggest a winter or early spring atmosphere. Wang Gai employs a muted palette, using subtle washes of colour to define the foliage and the water, while the structure of the trees is rendered with precise, calligraphic ink strokes.
