A striking Expressionist portrait of Alfred Döblin by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, rendered with bold colours and expressive brushwork, capturing the intensity of the sitter's gaze and the unease of the era.
This portrait of Alfred Döblin is by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. Kirchner, along with Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Fritz Bleyl, founded the group Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden in 1905. This group aimed to create a radical new form of art that would act as a bridge between traditional German art and modern Expressionism. Kirchner's style is characterised by its raw emotional power, bold colours, and simplified forms. He sought to capture the intensity of modern life and the alienation of the individual in an increasingly industrialised world. In this portrait, Döblin is depicted with angular features and intense gaze. The brushwork is loose and expressive, and the colours are bold and contrasting. The background is a swirl of blues, which creates a sense of unease and tension. The painting is a powerful example of Kirchner's Expressionist style and his ability to capture the psychological state of his subjects.
