A Dutch Golden Age allegorical portrait depicting the children of a prominent Leiden family, rendered in the style of the myth of Danaë.
This work by Daniël Mijtens II, a painter active during the later Dutch Golden Age, presents a complex allegorical scene. The composition draws upon classical mythology, specifically the myth of Danaë, to depict the children of Diederic Pietersz van Leyden and Alida Paets. The central figure reclines on a draped couch, her posture echoing traditional representations of the mythological princess visited by Zeus in a shower of gold.
In this interpretation, the shower of coins serves as a symbolic reference to the family's wealth and status. Mijtens employs a theatrical arrangement, utilising heavy drapery and soft, directional lighting to create a sense of depth and drama. The inclusion of a winged putto and a secondary female figure adds layers of narrative, suggesting a domestic or educational context framed through the lens of classical allegory. The artist demonstrates a command of flesh tones and fabric textures, characteristic of the period's focus on material realism.
The painting functions as both a portrait and a moralising narrative. By adopting the guise of a mythological subject, the sitters are elevated within a cultural framework that was highly regarded by the Dutch elite of the seventeenth century. The interplay between the figures, the golden rain, and the surrounding interior elements reflects the period's interest in combining portraiture with sophisticated iconographic programmes. Mijtens, who was part of a notable family of artists, here balances the requirements of a commissioned family portrait with the stylistic conventions of historical painting. The result is a work that captures the aspirations of the Leiden regency class, presenting their offspring within a scene of divine favour and material abundance.
