A detailed 1773 engraving by Reinier Vinkeles, depicting an allegorical tribute to the painter Allaert van Everdingen.
This engraving, dated 1773, functions as an allegorical tribute to the Dutch painter Allaert van Everdingen. The composition centres on a sculpted bust of the artist, positioned upon a pedestal in an open-air setting. Two putti flank the bust: one hovers in the air to place a laurel wreath upon the head of the sculpture, while the other stands at the base, securing a floral garland around the pedestal.
The scene incorporates classical motifs common to the period. To the left, a figure appears in a mountainous setting, referencing the rugged, Nordic-inspired scenery for which Van Everdingen was known. A smoking incense burner and scattered scrolls rest at the foot of the pedestal, symbols of artistic devotion and intellectual pursuit. The entire image is framed within an architectural border, topped by a cartouche inscribed with the Latin phrase 'STUDIO FOVETUR INGENIUM' (Talent is nurtured by study).
Reinier Vinkeles, a prolific Dutch draughtsman and engraver, executed this work with precise line work. The technique demonstrates the technical rigour of eighteenth-century printmaking, using varied hatching to define the textures of stone, fabric, and foliage. The inclusion of names such as Corneille, Voltaire, and Crébillon on the books atop the frame suggests the intellectual context in which this print was produced, aligning the artist with the literary and cultural figures of the Enlightenment. This print serves as a formal record of the esteem in which Van Everdingen was held by his contemporaries, presented through the visual language of classical allegory.
