Giorgio Vasari, a central figure in the Italian Renaissance, produced this work during the height of the Mannerist period. The composition features a central female figure, representing Geography, who reclines before a large terrestrial globe. Her posture, characterised by a dramatic twist of the torso, is a hallmark of the Mannerist style, which prioritised artificiality and complex poses over the balanced naturalism of the High Renaissance.

To the left, two bearded male figures observe the globe, their expressions suggesting scholarly contemplation. To the right, a third figure holds a compass, an instrument essential to the cartographic pursuits of the era. The inclusion of these tools reflects the intellectual climate of the sixteenth century, where geography was increasingly viewed as a discipline requiring both mathematical precision and artistic interpretation. The lighting is theatrical, casting deep shadows that model the figures and emphasise the sculptural quality of their drapery.

Vasari, better known for his biographical writings on artists, demonstrates here his technical proficiency in oil painting.
