A delicate Rococo portrait by Rosalba Carriera, featuring an allegorical figure with a tambourine and floral adornments.
Rosalba Carriera was a central figure in the development of the Rococo style, particularly through her mastery of the pastel medium. This work, Allegory of Music, demonstrates her characteristic approach to portraiture, which prioritised soft transitions and a delicate handling of light. The subject is depicted with a tambourine, a traditional attribute used to signify the auditory arts in eighteenth-century iconography.
Carriera achieved a reputation across Europe for her ability to capture the texture of skin and fabric with remarkable economy of stroke. The figure is adorned with a floral wreath, a common motif in her oeuvre that allowed her to display her skill in rendering varied botanical forms. Her technique involved blending pigments directly onto the paper, creating a luminous quality that oil paints often struggled to replicate at the time. The composition focuses on the subject's direct engagement with the viewer, a hallmark of her portrait practice that appealed to the aristocratic patrons of the Grand Tour.
By the early eighteenth century, Carriera had moved away from the heavier, more formal styles of the previous century, favouring a lighter palette and more intimate subject matter. Her work reflects the shift toward the decorative and the personal that defined the Venetian Rococo. The soft focus on the facial features, combined with the loose, impressionistic treatment of the lace and flowers, provides a clear example of her influence on the portraiture of her era. This print captures the subtle gradations of tone and the specific colour palette that made her work highly sought after by collectors in Venice, Paris, and London.
