A Baroque allegory by Bernardo Strozzi, depicting three figures engaged in the creative processes of painting and sculpture.
Bernardo Strozzi, a master of the Genoese Baroque, presents a complex narrative in this composition. The work functions as an allegory, personifying various creative disciplines through the presence of three female figures. Each figure interacts with tools associated with the fine arts, creating a dialogue between the act of creation and the finished object.
The central figure, positioned slightly behind the others, holds a plumb line, a tool traditionally linked to architecture and the precise measurement required in sculpture. To the right, a figure engages with a marble bust, her hand resting upon a mallet, suggesting the physical labour of the sculptor. The figure on the left, holding a palette and brushes, represents the art of painting. Her gaze is directed outward, inviting the viewer to consider the relationship between these distinct yet interconnected practices.
Strozzi employs a dramatic use of light, a hallmark of his style influenced by Caravaggio. The illumination is focused, catching the textures of the fabric, the smooth surface of the marble, and the expressive faces of the women. This contrast between light and shadow creates a sense of volume and physical presence. The composition is tightly packed, drawing the viewer into the immediate space of the studio. The figures are rendered with a fluid, painterly touch, characteristic of Strozzi's later career in Venice. The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, punctuated by the cooler blues and whites of the garments. This work captures the intellectual and physical nature of artistic production during the seventeenth century, presenting the studio as a space of active inquiry and technical skill.
