A complex Flemish Baroque allegory by Jacob Jordaens, depicting the restoration of order and prosperity following the Peace of Westphalia.
Jacob Jordaens, a central figure of the Flemish Baroque, produced this complex allegorical work to commemorate the 1648 Peace of Westphalia. The composition functions as a visual synthesis of political stability and divine order. Jordaens employs the dramatic lighting and muscular figures characteristic of his training in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens, yet he maintains a distinct approach to narrative density.
The scene features a multitude of mythological and symbolic figures. At the top, Time is depicted with his scythe, presiding over the distribution of abundance. Below, Mercury, the messenger of the gods, interacts with a central altar where a flame burns, symbolising the restoration of order. To the right, a figure in royal attire kneels in a gesture of gratitude or supplication, surrounded by attendants and putti. The lower section includes Neptune, identifiable by his trident, riding a sea creature, which suggests the maritime power and reach of the peace treaty. The interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of movement across the canvas, drawing the eye from the celestial realm down to the terrestrial figures.
Jordaens uses a warm, earthy palette punctuated by flashes of gold and crimson. The arrangement of figures is typical of the period, favouring a crowded, theatrical space that demands close inspection. The work captures the relief felt across Europe following the conclusion of the Thirty Years' War. By blending classical mythology with contemporary political themes, Jordaens creates a narrative that elevates the historical event into a timeless observation on the nature of governance and prosperity. This print captures the depth of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal shifts and the dramatic energy of the composition.
