A delicate study by Jacob de Wit featuring three putti at an altar, rendered in pen, ink, and grey wash on paper.
Jacob de Wit was a prominent Dutch painter and draughtsman, active during the first half of the eighteenth century. He is particularly recognised for his mastery of the 'witje', a technique involving monochrome painting in shades of grey to simulate the appearance of marble relief sculptures. This drawing demonstrates his facility with ink and wash, capturing the soft, rounded forms of putti in a manner typical of the Rococo period.
The composition features three putti gathered around a small, ornate altar. Their interaction suggests a ritualistic or symbolic act, common in the allegorical themes favoured by the artist for his decorative commissions. De Wit employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the figures, while the grey wash provides a sense of volume and atmospheric depth. The background is suggested through loose, gestural strokes, allowing the focus to remain on the central group. The artist's ability to convey movement and light through minimal means is evident in the way the wash pools and fades, creating a sense of soft illumination around the altar.
This work reflects the broader European interest in classical motifs during the eighteenth century, where the figure of the putto was frequently used to add a sense of playfulness or grace to interior schemes. De Wit's work often served as preparatory studies for larger decorative projects, including ceiling paintings and wall hangings in Amsterdam's patrician houses. The drawing is a clear example of his technical proficiency, showing how he balanced anatomical accuracy with the decorative requirements of the era. The use of brown ink and grey wash creates a harmonious, monochromatic palette that emphasises the sculptural quality of the figures, a hallmark of his broader artistic output.
