Description
Allenheads in Northumberland preserves the landscape of a former lead-mining village, where pale houses and dense conifers sit below open Pennine slopes marked by heather and broad grey spoil heaps.
Lead mining shaped Allenheads, a former industrial village in the North Pennines of Northumberland. Its workings developed into one of the region's major mines, leaving a history of extraction beneath and around a settlement now surrounded by open uplands and wooded slopes.
Grey-roofed stone buildings appear among green trees below a thick belt of conifers. Pale spoil heaps stretch across the higher slope, beneath broad purple-brown moorland. Narrow roads and field walls climb through the brighter grass. Heather tones suggest late summer, while full deciduous foliage remains green. Clear daylight highlights the contrast between the wooded valley and the open hillside.
