Description

A minimalist conceptual work by Sol LeWitt, featuring a systematic arrangement of not-straight and broken lines created according to a specific set of rules.

Sol LeWitt, a central figure in the development of Conceptual Art, prioritised the idea behind a work over its physical execution. This piece belongs to a series of works where LeWitt established a set of instructions or rules for the creation of the image. By delegating the physical act of drawing to these predetermined parameters, he removed the subjective hand of the artist from the final result.

The visual composition consists of a series of horizontal lines that span the paper. LeWitt specifies two distinct types of marks: not-straight lines originating from the right edge and broken lines originating from the left edge. The lengths of these lines are determined by chance, resulting in a rhythmic, repetitive pattern that occupies the entire surface. The monochromatic palette and the systematic arrangement of the lines create a sense of order, yet the individual variations in the line quality introduce a subtle, human element to the otherwise rigid structure.

LeWitt often used these systems to explore the possibilities of geometric forms and linear arrangements. The work functions as a visual record of a process. It does not aim to represent an external reality or convey an emotional narrative. Instead, it invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the written instruction and the visual outcome. The simplicity of the materials, typically ink on paper, allows the focus to remain entirely on the logic of the system. This approach shifted the focus of art production during the 1960s and 1970s, moving away from expressionism toward a more analytical and procedural method of creation. The resulting image is a study in repetition, variation, and the application of logic to visual space.

Artist Biography

Sol Lewitt

LeWitt wrote a letter to the sculptor Eva Hesse in 1965 when she was paralysed by self-doubt. He told her to try to do some bad work. The worst you can think of and see what happens but mainly relax and let everything go to hell. Two days after Hesse's death in 1970, he created Wall Drawing 46 in her memory, using non-straight lines for the first time. The aesthetic shift was credited to her influence.

He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1928, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. His father died when he was six. He drew on wrapping paper from his aunt's shop and took art classes at the Wadsworth Atheneum. He served in the Korean War, then settled in New York.

From 1968, he created over a thousand numbered wall drawings. He conceived them as musical scores that anyone could execute: a set of written instructions, carried out by other people, with the physical drawing destroyed after each exhibition. The idea, he argued, was the machine that makes the art. The execution was secondary. He championed and financially supported women artists who were being sidelined by the male-dominated art world. He refused to participate in celebrity culture and remained deliberately private. He died in 2007.
