A satirical 1903 illustration by Frantisek Kupka, critiquing the material wealth of the church in contrast to the poverty of the working class.
Frantisek Kupka produced this biting satirical work, titled 'Always poor' (Toujours pauvre), during his time in Paris. It appeared as a political cartoon in the French magazine 'L'Assiette au Beurre' in 1903. The image presents a critique of the Catholic Church, depicting a monk preaching to a crowd while standing before a crucifix. At the base of the cross, bags of money marked 'Denier St. Pierre' (Peter's Pence) suggest a preoccupation with material wealth that contradicts the ascetic vows of the clergy.
Kupka employs a stark visual language to convey his message. The monk is positioned with his back to the viewer, his arms outstretched in a gesture that mimics the crucified figure beside him. This visual parallel serves to question the sincerity of the religious institution. The background reveals a bleak, industrial horizon, contrasting the spiritual claims of the preacher with the harsh reality of the working class below. The crowd is rendered with individualised, weary faces, emphasising the human cost of the socio-economic disparities Kupka observed.
Technically, the work demonstrates Kupka's mastery of line and tone. The use of ink provides a sharp definition to the figures, while the muted, sepia-toned wash creates a sombre atmosphere. The composition is carefully balanced, using the verticality of the cross and the monk to draw the eye across the scene. This piece reflects the artist's early career as a political illustrator, a period that preceded his transition into pure abstraction. It remains a clear example of how Kupka utilised his technical skill to engage with the social issues of his time, moving beyond simple caricature to create a narrative of institutional hypocrisy.
