Amaryllis Curvifolia is a botanical illustration by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the 'Raphael of flowers'. This print showcases the amaryllis plant with coral-red flowers, rendered with delicate detail.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was a Belgian artist and botanist, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers at Malmaison, and he became known as the 'Raphael of flowers'. He was an official court artist of Queen Marie Antoinette, and continued painting through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. 'Amaryllis Curvifolia' is a botanical study showing the full plant, from its bulbous base to the burst of coral-red flowers at the top of its tall stalk. The leaves are long and slender, arching gracefully to the left. The stipple engraving technique, finished by hand, gives the print a soft, almost velvety texture, capturing the subtle gradations of colour and the delicate details of the plant's structure. The background is plain, which allows the viewer to focus on the plant's form and colour.
