Caravaggio's *Amor Victorious*, painted c. 1602-1603, depicts Cupid triumphing over human endeavours. This Baroque masterpiece is characterised by dramatic lighting and realistic detail.
Painted by Caravaggio around 1602-1603, *Amor Victorious* presents a complex allegorical scene. The painting depicts Cupid, the Roman god of love, as a winged boy standing triumphantly over objects representing human achievements and knowledge. These include musical instruments, architectural tools, and scientific instruments, all scattered beneath him. Cupid's pose is dynamic; he grins mischievously, holding arrows, symbols of desire and affection. His wings are large and detailed, contrasting with his smooth skin. The composition is set against a dark background, typical of Caravaggio's style, which uses dramatic lighting to focus attention on the central figure. The light source illuminates Cupid's body, creating a sense of three-dimensionality and realism. The discarded objects at his feet are rendered with careful attention to texture and detail, adding to the painting's overall sense of realism. The work is currently housed in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.
