A portrait of the poet Amy Lowell by Sarah Gooll Putnam, featuring a study in light and shadow.
This portrait depicts the American poet Amy Lowell during her youth. Sarah Gooll Putnam, a Boston-based artist, captures the subject in a seated position, turned slightly away from the viewer. The composition relies on a chiaroscuro effect, where the light source illuminates the subject's face and the folds of her white dress, while the background remains obscured in deep, warm shadows.
Lowell is dressed in a garment featuring prominent puffed sleeves, a style characteristic of the late nineteenth century. Her expression is contemplative, with her gaze directed toward the right of the frame. The brushwork is controlled, focusing on the texture of the fabric and the soft modelling of the skin tones. Putnam avoids excessive detail in the background, allowing the figure to emerge from the darkness.
Sarah Gooll Putnam was known for her portraiture within Boston society. Her approach to this work reflects the academic training common among American artists of the period, who often looked to European traditions of portrait painting. The focus remains on the psychological presence of the sitter rather than decorative elements. The muted colour palette, dominated by browns, ochres, and the stark white of the dress, creates a sense of intimacy. This print offers a clear view of the artist's technique, showing how she used light to define form and create a sense of volume within the figure. The work provides a historical record of Lowell before she became a central figure in the Imagist movement of the early twentieth century.
