A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō, capturing a dramatic kabuki actor in a tense, theatrical pose.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō depicts a kabuki actor in a dramatic pose, characteristic of the yakusha-e genre. The performer, associated with the Bando acting lineage, is portrayed as an outlaw cornered near a riverbank. The composition employs the exaggerated facial expressions and physical gestures common to the theatrical traditions of the Edo period. The actor wears a patterned kimono and protective gear, with the red kumadori makeup lines clearly visible, signifying the intensity of the character's emotional state.
Shunjō was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, a master of the Katsukawa school known for realistic actor portraits. Unlike the more stylised depictions of his predecessors, Shunjō and his contemporaries sought to capture the specific features and mannerisms of individual actors. The background is simplified, using horizontal bands to suggest the river and stylised pine motifs to indicate the setting. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the figure, whose posture suggests a moment of high tension before a confrontation. The print utilises a limited palette, typical of the period, with soft ochre, muted reds, and grey tones providing a balanced visual effect. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate placement of the figure within the frame demonstrate the technical precision of the Katsukawa school. This work offers a glimpse into the popular culture of 18th-century Japan, where theatre and printmaking were closely linked. Collectors of ukiyo-e will recognise the influence of the Katsukawa style in the focus on the actor's physical presence and the dramatic narrative conveyed through a single, frozen moment of performance.
