This woodcut originates from William Nicholson's 1897 publication, An Alphabet. The series represents a departure from the ornate Victorian styles of the era, favouring a stark, economical approach to form and colour. Nicholson utilised a limited palette, relying on bold black outlines and flat planes of colour to define his subjects. This specific plate depicts a beggar, rendered with a sense of gravity and economy that characterises the artist's broader graphic work. The composition is deliberately flat, eschewing traditional perspective to focus on the silhouette and the graphic weight of the figure. The beggar is shown in profile, draped in a heavy, tattered cloak that obscures much of his frame, while a simple staff provides a vertical anchor to the image. The letter B is integrated into the lower left corner, serving as both a typographic element and a structural component of the design.
