A contemplative scene of a solitary figure walking along a tree-lined path in a Moscow park during autumn, painted by Isaac Levitan in 1879.
Painted in 1879, An Autumn Day. Sokolniki represents a significant moment in the early career of Isaac Levitan. The work depicts a quiet, tree-lined path within the Sokolniki park in Moscow. A lone female figure walks away from the viewer, her presence providing a sense of scale and solitude against the backdrop of thinning autumn foliage. The palette is dominated by muted browns, greys, and ochres, reflecting the transition of the season.
Levitan was a student at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture when he produced this piece. The painting is notable for its atmospheric quality, capturing the damp, cool air of a Russian autumn. The composition relies on the strong vertical lines of the birch trees, which draw the eye into the distance, creating a sense of depth. The figure in the painting was actually added by Nikolai Chekhov, the brother of the writer Anton Chekhov, who was a close friend of the artist.
This work was acquired by the collector Pavel Tretyakov directly from the artist in 1880. It remains a clear example of the Russian realist tradition, which sought to depict the natural world with honesty and emotional resonance. Levitan focused on the mood of the environment, moving away from purely descriptive painting toward a more lyrical interpretation of the Russian countryside. The brushwork is controlled yet expressive, allowing the textures of the bark and the fallen leaves to emerge through subtle variations in tone. The painting avoids dramatic narrative, instead inviting the viewer to observe the stillness of the park on an overcast day.
