An illustration of the fable of Hercules and the Wagoner by Walter Crane. This work exemplifies Crane's Arts and Crafts style, with clear lines and a muted colour palette.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation, alongside Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. Crane was a proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement, advocating for beautiful design accessible to all social classes. His work often incorporated elements of classical mythology, folklore, and medieval romance. He designed wallpaper and textiles, in addition to his prolific output of illustrated books. This illustration depicts the fable of Hercules and the Wagoner. A wagoner is stuck in the mud and calls upon Hercules for assistance. Hercules appears as a statue on a plinth. The text below the image tells the moral of the story: 'The Gods help those who help themselves.' The illustration is executed in Crane's distinctive style, with clear lines and flat areas of colour. The colour palette is muted, with shades of blue, yellow, and brown predominating. The composition is carefully balanced, with the figures and text arranged to create a harmonious whole.
