A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō, depicting a kabuki actor in samurai attire with the characteristic realism of the Katsukawa school.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō captures a performer in the guise of a samurai, a common subject within the yakusha-e genre of Ukiyo-e art. The Katsukawa school, founded by Katsukawa Shunshō, moved away from the stylised, mask-like faces of earlier actors to focus on individualised portraits. This shift allowed audiences to recognise specific performers by their unique facial features and expressions.
The actor is depicted in a standing pose, wearing a dark outer kimono over a lighter undergarment. Two swords are tucked into his sash, signifying his status as a warrior. The composition is minimal, using a neutral background that draws attention to the figure. The lines are clean and precise, characteristic of the mid-Edo period printmaking techniques. The artist employs a limited colour palette, relying on the contrast between the dark robe and the pale background to create visual balance.
Prints of this nature were produced in large numbers as souvenirs for theatre-goers in Edo. They functioned as promotional material for kabuki performances, documenting the appearance of popular actors in their most famous roles. The focus remains on the actor's posture and the specific details of his costume, which would have been immediately recognisable to contemporary viewers. The work provides a clear example of the Katsukawa school's approach to portraiture, prioritising realism over the idealised forms found in earlier prints. The simplicity of the design reflects the functional purpose of these images, which were intended to be affordable and accessible to the general public. By capturing the essence of the performance, the artist preserves a moment from the kabuki stage, offering a glimpse into the theatrical culture of eighteenth-century Japan.
