A delicate woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Japanese folktale of the old man who causes cherry trees to bloom with magical ashes.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a scene from the Japanese folktale known as Hanasaka Jiisan, or The Old Man Who Made the Trees Blossom. The composition is formatted as an uchiwa-e, a design intended for a rigid, paddle-shaped fan. The print captures the moment the elderly protagonist scatters magical ashes over a withered cherry tree, causing it to bloom instantly.
Hiroshige employs a minimalist approach to the composition. The rolling hills are rendered in flat, muted green tones, providing a clean backdrop for the central action. The cherry tree, positioned in the lower foreground, is detailed with delicate pink blossoms, contrasting with the bare, skeletal branches of the trees on the hillsides. To the left, two figures in traditional attire walk away from the scene, their silhouettes providing a sense of scale and narrative progression. The artist uses a soft, pale sky to draw the eye towards the old man, who is perched on the slope with his basket of ashes.
As a master of the ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige demonstrates his ability to distil complex narratives into a single, balanced image. The print reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period, where functional objects like fans were frequently decorated with scenes from literature, theatre, and folklore. The clean lines and controlled colour palette are characteristic of Hiroshige's later work, where he moved away from the dense detail of his earlier series towards a more refined, graphic simplicity. The inclusion of calligraphic text and the artist's seal confirms the print's origin as a commercial production for the urban population of Edo. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural storytelling that permeated daily life in nineteenth-century Japan, presented through the medium of mass-produced, yet highly artistic, woodblock prints.
