A fine art print of William Blake's 1825 engraving, depicting Job interceding for his friends amidst a radiant, spiritual light.
This engraving is plate 18 from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, a series completed towards the end of his life. The composition depicts the moment of reconciliation where Job, having endured immense suffering, intercedes on behalf of his friends. Job stands at the centre with arms outstretched, his figure silhouetted against a radiant, flame-like light that rises from an altar. Below him, his friends kneel in prayer, their postures conveying humility and repentance.
Blake employs a rigorous linear style, using fine hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The central scene is framed by an ornamental border containing angelic figures and symbolic motifs, a characteristic feature of Blake's illuminated books. The text at the top and bottom of the plate integrates the visual narrative with the biblical source material, creating a unified page design. The work demonstrates Blake's technical mastery of the copperplate engraving process, which he refined through years of practice as a professional printmaker.
Unlike his earlier, more experimental colour-printed works, this series relies on the stark contrast between black ink and white paper. The clarity of the lines allows for a focus on the expressive gestures of the figures and the symbolic weight of the light. The scene captures a moment of spiritual restoration, reflecting Blake's personal interpretation of the biblical text. The inclusion of the artist's signature and the publication details at the bottom confirms its status as a finished commercial print from the 1825 edition. This piece remains a primary example of Blake's ability to synthesise complex theological themes with precise, classical draughtsmanship.
