A fine engraving from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, depicting the arrival of Job's friends.
This engraving is plate seven from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, a series completed in 1825. The work depicts the moment Job's friends arrive to find him in his state of affliction. Blake employs his characteristic linear style, using precise hatching to model the figures and the surrounding environment. The central scene shows Job seated on the ground, his body slumped in suffering, while his friends stand to the left, their arms raised in a gesture of recognition and grief.
Blake frames the central image with decorative borders containing additional figures and text. The upper portion includes the verse: 'What! shall we recieve Good at the hand of God & shall we not also recieve Evil'. Below the main image, the title text is inscribed, accompanied by further scriptural references. The composition balances the narrative focus on Job with the surrounding symbolic elements, typical of Blake's approach to biblical subjects. His technique relies on the clarity of the line, avoiding tonal washes to maintain a sharp, graphic quality. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and expressive gestures that define Blake's draughtsmanship. This series represents a mature phase in his career, demonstrating his technical mastery of the copperplate medium. The work functions as both a visual narrative and a meditative text, inviting the viewer to engage with the theological themes of patience and divine providence. The stark contrast between the dark, textured ground and the lighter figures creates a sense of dramatic tension, focusing attention on the emotional state of the protagonists. As a print, it captures the precision of Blake's original design, preserving the fine details of the cross-hatching and the calligraphic quality of the lettering.
