A detail from a fresco by Benozzo Gozzoli, this image shows two angels in a heavenly garden, one gathering flowers and the other playing an instrument. The work exemplifies Gozzoli's decorative style and use of colour.
This detail originates from a larger fresco cycle by Benozzo Gozzoli, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. Gozzoli, born Benozzo di Lese, was a student of Fra Angelico and is best known for his frescoes, particularly the series in the Magi Chapel of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence. His style is characterised by its decorative quality, attention to detail, and narrative clarity. The image depicts two angels within a paradisiacal setting. The angel on the left carries a basket filled with flowers, while the angel on the right appears to be playing a musical instrument, perhaps a flute or pipe. Both figures are adorned in flowing robes of blue and gold, with distinctive red wings patterned with black markings. The background features a dense arrangement of trees and flowering bushes, creating a sense of an enclosed, idyllic garden. The composition is relatively flat, typical of the period, with less emphasis on perspective than would be seen in later Renaissance works. The colour palette is dominated by blues, greens, reds, and golds, lending the scene a sense of richness and harmony.
