A detailed engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicting an angel with symbols of the Passion, rendered with precise line work and dramatic chiaroscuro.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II presents a complex allegorical figure, an angel holding symbols associated with the betrayal and arrest of Christ. The composition is typical of the Northern Mannerist tradition, where the artist employs precise, controlled lines to define form and texture. The angel holds a torch in one hand, while the other hand gestures toward a purse and a sword resting on a ledge. These objects, specifically the sword of Saint Peter and the purse of Judas, serve as visual shorthand for the events in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of engravers, was active in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. His technical proficiency is evident in the treatment of the angel's wings and the drapery of the robes. The cross-hatching creates a sense of volume and shadow, providing a tactile quality to the fabric and the metallic surfaces of the sword. The background, filled with swirling, dark clouds, adds a sense of drama and urgency to the scene. The Latin inscription at the base provides a moralising context, warning against the commodification of faith and divine grace.
As a printmaker, Sadeler was highly regarded for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his contemporaries into the medium of engraving. This work demonstrates his command over light and shadow, using the stark contrast of the black ink against the paper to create a sombre, reflective atmosphere. The figure of the angel is rendered with a grace that balances the heavy symbolism of the objects displayed. This print offers a window into the intellectual and artistic climate of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, where religious iconography was frequently used to convey complex theological and moral messages through refined graphic techniques.
