A fine enamel portrait miniature of Anne, Princess Royal, by the celebrated London-based artist Christian Friedrich Zincke.
This portrait miniature depicts Anne, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange, daughter of King George II of Great Britain. Executed by Christian Friedrich Zincke, a German-born artist who established a successful practice in London, the work demonstrates the technical precision required for enamel painting. Zincke was particularly noted for his ability to capture fine detail on small copper plates, a skill that made him a preferred portraitist for the British aristocracy and royal family during the early eighteenth century.
The subject is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a gown adorned with delicate floral embroidery and lace. Her hair is styled in the fashion of the period, decorated with pearls. The inclusion of an ermine-trimmed mantle draped over her shoulder signifies her royal status. The background is a soft, atmospheric wash of blue, which provides a neutral setting for the figure. The oval format is characteristic of the period, designed to be worn as jewellery or kept in a private collection.
Zincke used a palette of soft pastels and white, which contrasts with the deeper tones of the purple mantle. The application of enamel allows for a smooth, luminous finish that has preserved the clarity of the colours over centuries. This portrait serves as a record of the sitter's appearance following her marriage to William IV, Prince of Orange, in 1734. The work reflects the refined aesthetic of the Georgian era, where portrait miniatures functioned as intimate tokens of affection or political alliances. The artist's control over the medium is evident in the subtle shading of the face and the careful rendering of the lace textures, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with his studio.
