A refined seventeenth-century portrait etching of Anne of Austria by Jean Morin, capturing the Queen in her mourning attire.
This portrait by Jean Morin depicts Anne of Austria, Queen of France, during her period of widowhood. Morin, a French printmaker active in the mid-seventeenth century, utilised a combination of etching and engraving to achieve the subtle tonal variations seen in the Queen's attire and the surrounding architectural frame. The work is based on a painting by Philippe de Champaigne, a contemporary artist known for his austere and precise style.
The composition is contained within an octagonal frame, which bears the inscription identifying the subject as the Regent of France and Navarre. Anne of Austria is shown in a sombre, modest habit, reflecting the gravity of her position and the mourning customs of the French court. Her expression is composed, and the focus remains on the delicate rendering of her features and the texture of her white collar against the dark fabric of her dress. Morin employed a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to model the forms, creating a sense of volume and depth without relying on excessive ornamentation.
Jean Morin was highly regarded for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his subjects into the medium of print. His work often captured the psychological presence of the French aristocracy, providing a clear record of their appearance and status. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the seventeenth-century French court, where portraiture served as a primary means of documenting political figures. The technical precision of the engraving, particularly in the treatment of the fabric and the architectural border, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with Morin's studio. This piece remains a representative example of French portrait printmaking from the Baroque era, maintaining a balance between formal representation and individual characterisation.
