A powerful 1916 lithograph by Oskar Kokoschka, capturing the Annunciation through raw, gestural lines and high-contrast expressionist mark-making.
This lithograph by Oskar Kokoschka, titled Annunciation, appeared in the periodical Bildermann on 5 July 1916. During this period, Kokoschka was recovering from injuries sustained while serving in the First World War. His work from these years often reflects a heightened sense of psychological tension and emotional urgency, moving away from the more decorative tendencies of his earlier Viennese output. The composition depicts the biblical scene of the Annunciation through a lens of raw, gestural mark-making. Kokoschka employs a frenetic, calligraphic line quality that suggests movement and instability. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, their forms emerging from a dense web of charcoal-like strokes. The angel, positioned above, descends into the space occupied by the Virgin, who is shown in a state of quiet contemplation. The surrounding environment is suggested rather than defined, with dark, hatched areas creating a sense of enclosure and shadow. Unlike traditional depictions of this subject, which often emphasise serenity or divine light, Kokoschka focuses on the visceral, human experience of the encounter. The heavy use of black ink against the stark white paper creates a high-contrast aesthetic that is characteristic of his graphic work. This print demonstrates his ability to convey complex emotional states through simplified, distorted forms. The work remains a significant example of the Expressionist approach to religious iconography, where the focus shifts from narrative clarity to the subjective experience of the artist. The signature OK is visible in the lower left, a mark that became synonymous with his graphic identity during this era.
