This landscape by Henri-Edmond Cross captures the Mediterranean coast with a pointillist technique. Small strokes of colour create a shimmering effect, evoking the light and atmosphere of Antibes.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in Douai, is known for his contribution to the Neo-Impressionist movement. He, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, developed a style called pointillism, a technique using small, distinct dots of colour applied in patterns to form an image. Cross adopted this method after meeting Signac in 1883. His work moved away from the more structured approach of Seurat, embracing looser brushwork and brighter colours. He found inspiration in the landscapes of southern France, where he lived from 1891 until his death. 'Antibes, Morning' exemplifies Cross's mature style. The painting depicts a coastal view of Antibes, a town on the French Riviera. The composition is divided into three horizontal bands: the foreground with vegetation, the sea, and the distant mountains. Cross uses small, individual strokes of colour to create a shimmering effect, capturing the light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast. The colour palette includes blues, greens, yellows, and touches of red and orange, all applied in a mosaic-like pattern. The overall effect is one of luminosity and tranquility, characteristic of Cross's later works.
