Paul Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, painted this view of Antibes in 1919. By this stage in his career, Signac had moved away from the strict, tiny dots of his earlier work, favouring larger, rectangular brushstrokes that resemble a mosaic. This technique allows the viewer to perceive the optical mixing of colours as they step back from the canvas.
The composition captures the coastal town under a heavy, atmospheric sky. The mountains in the distance are rendered in cool blues and purples, suggesting the impending weather. Below, the architecture of Antibes is simplified into blocks of light, contrasting with the darker, saturated tones of the foliage. The water in the foreground acts as a mirror, reflecting the sky and the town through a rhythmic arrangement of blue, green, and white strokes.
Signac spent much of his life travelling along the French coast, documenting the changing light and weather conditions of the Mediterranean. His approach to colour theory, influenced by the scientific writings of Michel Eugène Chevreul, remains evident here. He does not blend pigments on the palette, but places them side by side on the canvas. This method creates a sense of luminosity that mimics the intensity of natural light. However, Signac's contribution to the development and popularisation of this revolutionary technique is undeniable. Born in Paris in 1863, he initially trained as an architect before finding his true calling in painting. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Signac came from a relatively wealthy background, allowing him the freedom to pursue his artistic passions without the immediate pressure of commercial success.
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism.
