A formal 1663 engraving by Pierre Lombart depicting the French military commander Antoine, Duc de Gramont, in armour.
This engraving by Pierre Lombart depicts Antoine, Duc de Gramont, a prominent French military commander and diplomat of the seventeenth century. Lombart, a French engraver who spent much of his career in London, demonstrates his technical precision in this portrait. The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for formal portraiture of the period, which allows for a clear focus on the sitter's features and status.
The Duc de Gramont is shown wearing armour, reflecting his role as a Marshal of France. His long, flowing wig and lace collar are rendered with careful attention to texture, contrasting with the metallic sheen of his breastplate. The surrounding oval border contains a Latin inscription detailing his titles and offices, which serves to establish his authority and public identity. Below the portrait, the inclusion of his coat of arms further reinforces his noble lineage and social standing.
Lombart utilised a refined system of hatching and cross-hatching to create depth and volume within the figure. The lighting is controlled, drawing the eye to the face of the Duke while allowing the darker tones of the armour to recede into the background. This work is based on a painting by Wallerant Vaillant, as indicated by the inscription 'V. Vaillant Pinxit' at the base of the frame. The collaboration between painter and engraver was a standard practice for disseminating the likenesses of high-ranking individuals across Europe. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the French court during the reign of Louis XIV, capturing the gravity and formality expected of a military leader of the era.
