A detailed 18th-century engraving by Nicolas Edelinck depicting the French writer Antoine Houdart de la Motte in a scholarly pose.
This engraving by Nicolas Edelinck depicts the French writer and dramatist Antoine Houdart de la Motte. Edelinck, a member of a prominent family of engravers, captures the subject in a scholarly setting. The sitter wears a soft cap and a loose, informal robe, which was a common convention for portraits of intellectuals during the early eighteenth century. He holds a quill and a manuscript, suggesting his active engagement with literary pursuits.
The composition follows the traditions of French portraiture from the period. The background is kept relatively simple, allowing the focus to remain on the sitter's expression and the texture of his clothing. Edelinck employs precise cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the folds of the fabric and the contours of the face. The inclusion of books on the table reinforces the identity of the subject as a man of letters and a member of the Académie Française.
Nicolas Edelinck was the son of the celebrated engraver Gérard Edelinck. He maintained the technical standards of his father, producing works that were valued for their clarity and fidelity to the original paintings they reproduced. This print is based on a painting by Jean Ranc, as indicated by the inscription 'Ranc, pinxit' at the bottom left. The work provides a clear example of the reproductive printmaking techniques used to disseminate the likenesses of public figures in the eighteenth century. The print is a study in the formal portrait style of the era, balancing the sitter's professional identity with the aesthetic requirements of the medium.
