Aoigaoka Falls in the Eastern Capital is a woodblock print from the series A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces, produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the early 1830s. This series demonstrates the artist's interest in the physical properties of water and the integration of human activity within natural settings. The composition features a waterfall cascading into a pool, framed by the rounded, mossy embankments characteristic of the Edo period topography.
In the foreground, Hokusai depicts figures engaged in daily labour, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the geological features. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that became accessible in Japan during this period, defines the water and the sky, creating a contrast with the green tones of the hillside.
