A satirical etching by Matthijs Pool depicting monkeys dressed as humans navigating a boat, reflecting eighteenth-century Dutch social commentary.
This etching by Matthijs Pool, titled Apen in een boot, belongs to a tradition of satirical imagery popular in the early eighteenth-century Netherlands. The work depicts a group of monkeys dressed in human clothing, navigating a small vessel upon a choppy sea. The scene is populated with other ships in the distance, suggesting a maritime voyage. The anthropomorphic figures, complete with hats and coats, engage in nautical activities, creating a humorous juxtaposition between the animal subjects and the serious business of seafaring.
Pool, an engraver and publisher based in Amsterdam, utilised the etching technique to capture fine details in the rigging of the boats and the expressions of the monkeys. The composition is structured with the primary vessel in the centre, flanked by secondary boats, providing a sense of depth and activity. Below the image, the print features bilingual text in French and Dutch, which serves to clarify the satirical intent of the work. Such prints were often produced as social commentary, using the figure of the monkey to mock human behaviour, vanity, or political situations of the era.
As a piece of graphic art, this print demonstrates the technical skill of Dutch engravers of the period. The lines are precise, allowing for the rendering of textures such as the wooden planks of the boat, the fabric of the clothing, and the movement of the water. The inclusion of the artist's signature and location, M. Pool Exo: Amsterdam, confirms its provenance as a commercial print intended for a wider audience. This work offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the time, where humour and moral instruction were frequently combined in printed media.
