A satirical etching by Matthijs Pool depicting monkeys mimicking human social activities in an eighteenth-century tavern.
This etching by Matthijs Pool belongs to the genre of singerie, a decorative style popular in the early eighteenth century that depicts monkeys mimicking human behaviour. In this scene, a group of anthropomorphised monkeys occupies an inn, engaging in activities typical of the Dutch tavern culture of the period. Some figures sit around a table playing cards, while others smoke pipes or converse, mirroring the social habits of the human population. In the foreground, a monkey couple sits together, dressed in contemporary attire, which adds a layer of satire to the composition.
Pool, an Amsterdam-based engraver, utilised fine lines to capture the textures of the monkeys' fur and the fabric of their clothing. The interior of the inn is rendered with a sense of depth, featuring a window, a curtain, and a bed in the background. The inclusion of text at the bottom of the print, written in both French and Dutch, provides a moralising commentary on the scene, suggesting that the behaviour of the monkeys serves as a reflection of human folly. The work captures the playful yet critical spirit of the era, where the animal kingdom was frequently used as a mirror for societal norms and vices. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to guide the eye across the various social interactions taking place within the room. This print offers a glimpse into the satirical graphic arts of the Dutch Republic, where such humorous and often cynical depictions were widely circulated among the public.
