A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the mythological punishment of the satyr Marsyas by the god Apollo.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts the classical myth of the satyr Marsyas, who is bound to a tree after losing a musical contest against the god Apollo. The composition focuses on the moment of retribution, with Apollo standing to the left, his lyre discarded on the ground, while he prepares to punish his rival. Tempesta, a prolific printmaker of the Roman school, employs a clear, narrative style that prioritises the legibility of the figures and the dramatic tension of the scene.
The work is characterised by precise, rhythmic hatching that defines the musculature of the figures and the texture of the surrounding environment. The background features a simplified, schematic treatment of trees and terrain, which serves to keep the viewer's attention on the central interaction. The inclusion of the Latin inscription, 'Marsyas victus ab Apolline excoriatur', confirms the subject matter and aligns with the educational and moralising function of such prints during the early seventeenth century.
Tempesta was highly regarded for his ability to translate complex mythological narratives into accessible visual formats. His technique reflects the influence of his training in Florence and his subsequent career in Rome, where he became known for his skill in etching and his extensive output of series illustrating Ovid's Metamorphoses. This print demonstrates his command of line and his ability to convey movement and emotion within a compact, monochromatic frame. The work remains a fine example of the printmaking traditions that circulated classical knowledge among artists and collectors of the period. It provides a direct look at how Renaissance and Baroque artists interpreted the darker themes of Greek mythology, focusing on the consequences of hubris and the divine authority of the gods.
