A detailed fragment from Duccio's Maestà, depicting the apostles in a moment of spiritual awe, rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
This fragment originates from the Maestà, the monumental altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the Sienese School, executed this work between 1308 and 1311. The panel displays the characteristic stylistic traits of the period, combining Byzantine tradition with a new interest in human emotion and spatial awareness.
The composition focuses on a group of apostles, their faces turned upward in a collective expression of awe and reverence. Duccio employs a refined colour palette, dominated by the contrast between the saturated vermilion robes and the cool, cerulean blue of the foreground figure. The gold leaf backgrounds, etched with delicate patterns, provide a luminous, otherworldly atmosphere that separates the figures from a terrestrial setting.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of tempera painting on wood. The fine lines used to define the facial features and the folds of the garments show a departure from the rigid stylisation of earlier medieval art. Each apostle is rendered with individualised features, suggesting a narrative depth that invites the viewer to engage with the psychological state of the subjects. The visible craquelure across the surface serves as a reminder of the age and material history of the original panel. This print captures the specific textures of the tempera medium, from the matte finish of the pigments to the reflective quality of the gilded halos. It remains a primary example of the transition toward the naturalism that would define the early Italian Renaissance.
