A collection of three historical photographs by Dick W.B. van Maarseveen documenting daily life, administration, and camp layout during the 1940s.
This composite archival document presents three distinct scenes captured by Dutch photographer Dick W.B. van Maarseveen during the mid-twentieth century. The imagery provides a direct, unadorned record of life within a military or internment camp setting. The top-left panel, labelled 'Appél', depicts a formation of soldiers or detainees standing in a wide, open parade ground, demonstrating the rigid structure of daily routines. The top-right panel, 'afd. Post', offers a view into a busy postal department, where individuals are seated at desks, processing correspondence amidst wooden structures. The bottom panel, 'overzicht barakken', provides a wider perspective of the camp layout, showing a central thoroughfare flanked by rows of barracks, with groups of people gathered in the open space.
Van Maarseveen’s work functions as a primary visual record of the period. The photographs are characterised by a functional, objective approach to documentation. There is no attempt to romanticise the environment; instead, the focus remains on the spatial arrangement of the camp and the activities of the inhabitants. The stark contrast of the black and white film captures the textures of the wooden buildings and the uniformity of the figures. These images serve as a historical reference for the conditions and organisation of such facilities during the era. By presenting these scenes together, the composition allows for a comprehensive view of the camp environment, from the collective discipline of the roll call to the administrative tasks of the postal service and the general layout of the living quarters. This collection is a valuable resource for those interested in mid-century military history and the documentary traditions of Dutch photography.
