This fan painting by Wu Xizai, a prominent calligrapher and seal carver of the Qing Dynasty, demonstrates the synthesis of brushwork and botanical observation characteristic of the literati tradition. The composition follows the format of a folding fan, a popular medium for scholars to display their mastery of both ink wash painting and calligraphy.
The central subject is a flowering apricot branch, rendered with controlled, rhythmic ink strokes. Wu Xizai employs varying degrees of ink saturation to suggest the volume of the blossoms and the gnarled texture of the wood. The branches extend across the fan in a balanced, asymmetrical arrangement, leaving ample negative space that provides a sense of air and movement.
To the right, a column of elegant running-script calligraphy complements the visual weight of the branch.
