A dynamic woodblock print by Ryūsai Shigeharu depicting a dramatic kabuki battle scene between two actors on a tiled roof.
This woodblock print by Ryūsai Shigeharu depicts a dramatic scene from the kabuki theatre, featuring the actors Arashi Rikan II and Nakamura Utaemon III. The composition captures a high-tension moment from the narrative of The Eight Heroes of the Satomi Clan. The actors are shown in a physical struggle atop a tiled roof, a common staging device in kabuki performances to suggest height and danger.
Shigeharu, a prominent artist of the Kamigata school based in Osaka, focuses on the expressive facial features and dynamic postures of the performers. The print utilises a clear, graphic style typical of the period, with bold outlines defining the figures against the simplified background of the roof tiles and distant water. The actors wear patterned kimonos, which provide a rhythmic visual element to the composition. The inclusion of a cartouche in the upper right corner provides context for the scene, identifying the characters and the literary source material.
As a work of kabuki-e, this print serves as a record of a specific performance. It documents the physical appearance and costume choices of the actors, who were celebrities of their time. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of blues, reds, and greens to create contrast and focus the viewer on the central conflict. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Shigeharu, particularly in the rendering of the roof tiles and the fine lines of the actors' hair and clothing. This piece offers an insight into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where the theatre and the print market were closely linked.
