A 1582 engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicting the allegorical union of Labor and Diligence, rendered with the technical precision of the Northern Mannerist tradition.
This engraving, dated 1582, represents an allegorical union between Labor and Diligence. While the composition is based on a design by Anthonie Blocklandt, the execution is by the Dutch master Hendrick Goltzius. The print depicts two figures in an intimate embrace, symbolising the necessary partnership between hard work and careful application to achieve artistic or intellectual success. The male figure, representing Labor, is depicted with muscular, robust anatomy, while the female figure, Diligence, is shown with graceful, elongated proportions typical of the Mannerist style.
Surrounding the figures are various tools of trade, including a shovel and a mallet, which ground the allegory in physical reality. The background is sparse, focusing the viewer on the interaction between the two personifications. The Latin and Dutch inscriptions at the base explain the moral: when Labor and Diligence join hands, the arts flourish. Goltzius demonstrates his technical mastery through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques to create volume and texture, particularly in the musculature of the figures and the folds of the drapery. The print is a fine example of the sophisticated, intellectualised art produced in the Netherlands during the late sixteenth century, where classical themes were frequently adapted to convey moralising messages about human industry and the pursuit of excellence.
