A detailed 1592 engraving by Joris Hoefnagel featuring a mouse, wild strawberries, and botanical specimens, reflecting the scientific curiosity of the Northern Renaissance.
This engraving originates from the 'Archetypa studiaque patris Georgii Hoefnagelii', a collection published in 1592 by Joris Hoefnagel. The work displays the characteristic precision of late sixteenth-century Flemish natural history illustration. Hoefnagel, a key figure in the transition from medieval manuscript illumination to the scientific observation of the natural world, presents a composition that balances botanical accuracy with symbolic moralising.
The image features a central mouse surrounded by various flora, including columbine, wild strawberries, and a citron. Small insects are scattered across the composition, providing a sense of scale and biological diversity. The Latin inscriptions at the top and bottom of the plate reflect the humanist tradition of the era, drawing upon classical literary references to provide a philosophical frame for the natural subjects. The engraving technique employs fine cross-hatching to define the textures of the fur, the rough skin of the fruit, and the delicate veins of the leaves.
Hoefnagel’s approach to the natural world is one of careful documentation. He treats each specimen with individual attention, yet arranges them in a manner that suggests a curated collection rather than a wild habitat. This work serves as a record of the period's fascination with the 'cabinet of curiosities', where the study of nature was inextricably linked to the pursuit of knowledge and the appreciation of divine order. The print remains a clear example of the intersection between art and early modern science, capturing the meticulous observation that defined Hoefnagel's career as a court artist and miniaturist.
