Engraving by Agostino Carracci depicting the heraldic arms of Cardinal Cinzio Aldobrandini, flanked by allegorical figures of Prudence and Justice.
This engraving by Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) depicts the heraldic arms of Cardinal Cinzio Aldobrandini. Carracci, an Italian painter, printmaker, and draughtsman, was a central figure in the development of the Bolognese School of painting, which sought to revive classical ideals in art. He was the brother of Annibale Carracci and cousin of Ludovico Carracci; together, they founded an art academy called the Accademia degli Incamminati. The print features a shield bearing the Aldobrandini family's coat of arms, surmounted by a cardinal's hat and elaborate decorative elements. Two allegorical figures flank the shield: on the left, a woman holding a mirror, symbolising prudence or self-knowledge; on the right, a woman with a sword and scales, representing justice. The composition is characterised by fine, precise lines and careful attention to detail, typical of Carracci's engraving style. The heraldic symbols and allegorical figures are rendered with clarity and precision, reflecting the artist's skill in translating complex imagery into a graphic medium.
