Description

A woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunisada III depicting the Emperor Meiji's return to Tokyo following the Russo-Japanese War.

This woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunisada III depicts the return of the Emperor Meiji to Tokyo following the conclusion of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. The composition captures a formal procession, documenting the intersection of traditional Japanese imperial ceremony and Western-influenced military attire. The Emperor is shown arriving in a horse-drawn carriage, surrounded by high-ranking officials and military personnel in formal uniforms.

The print reflects the visual culture of the Meiji era, a period defined by rapid modernisation and the adoption of Western aesthetics. The artist employs a clear, narrative style, using the three-panel format to expand the scene horizontally. The colour palette includes the red and white of the Japanese flag, alongside the deep blues and blacks of the military uniforms. The inclusion of the imperial carriage, topped with a golden phoenix, provides a clear visual marker of the Emperor's status.

Utagawa Kunisada III, also known as Baidō Hōsai, was a prolific printmaker who documented many of the political and social shifts during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work often focused on contemporary events, providing a visual record of Japan's changing national identity. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clean lines and flat areas of colour that were characteristic of the period. The scene is framed by architectural elements and banners, which help to organise the figures within the space. This work offers a view into the public pageantry that accompanied Japan's emergence as a global power during the early twentieth century.
