A panoramic winter scene by Boris Kustodiev depicting the traditional Russian Shrovetide festival with a troika descending a snowy hill.
Boris Kustodiev, a painter associated with the World of Art group, produced this work in 1916. It depicts the traditional Russian celebration of Maslenitsa, or Shrovetide, a festive period preceding Great Lent. The composition captures a panoramic view of a provincial town blanketed in deep snow, with the architectural silhouettes of churches and belfries rising against a soft, pastel-toned sky.
In the foreground, a troika, the traditional Russian carriage drawn by three horses, descends a snowy slope. The passengers are wrapped in heavy furs, reflecting the biting cold of the season. Kustodiev employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe the bustling activity of the town below, where figures gather near fairground structures and stalls. The scene balances the quiet stillness of the winter environment with the kinetic energy of the holiday festivities.
Kustodiev is recognised for his idealised, often nostalgic depictions of Russian provincial life. His approach combines elements of folk art with a refined academic technique. The palette is dominated by cool whites and blues, contrasted by the warmer tones of the sunset and the decorative elements of the carriage. The artist frequently returned to the theme of Shrovetide throughout his career, using it to explore the intersection of seasonal change and cultural tradition. This particular work demonstrates his ability to manage complex, multi-layered compositions while maintaining a clear narrative focus on the customs of the period. The inclusion of birds in flight across the upper register adds a sense of movement to the otherwise static, frozen atmosphere of the winter day.
