A detailed ink sketch by Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht depicting a Dutch field artillery unit on horseback in an open field.
Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht was a Dutch painter and illustrator, widely recognised for his focus on military subjects. This ink sketch, titled Artillerie te velde, captures a scene of field artillery units in a moment of pause or tactical observation. The composition features a group of mounted soldiers, their horses standing in a field, with a piece of artillery equipment visible to the right.
The artist employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the forms of the horses and the posture of the riders. His ability to convey the weight and movement of the animals, combined with the precise rendering of military uniforms and equipment, demonstrates his technical proficiency. The sketch lacks heavy shading, relying instead on the economy of line to suggest the open, flat terrain typical of the Dutch countryside.
Van Papendrecht spent much of his career documenting the Dutch military, providing a visual record of uniforms, weaponry, and daily life within the armed forces during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work is often characterised by this observational quality, where the focus remains on the functional aspects of the scene rather than romanticised depictions of conflict. The presence of the artist's monogram at the bottom of the sheet confirms the work as an authentic study, likely produced as a preparatory drawing or a quick field observation. The simplicity of the medium allows the viewer to appreciate the artist's draftsmanship and his keen eye for the details of military organisation. This print offers a clear view of the original ink lines, preserving the spontaneous nature of the initial sketch.
