A woodcut print by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 'Artist Begging for Applause' features a figure in a red garment with arms outstretched, rendered in bold, simplified lines typical of the Expressionist style.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, a founder of the artists group Die Brücke ('The Bridge'), a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism. He volunteered for army service in the First World War, but soon suffered a breakdown and was discharged. In 1933, his work was branded as 'degenerate' by the Nazis, and in 1937, over 600 of his works were removed from German museums. In 1938, he committed suicide. 'Artist Begging for Applause' is a woodcut print featuring a figure in a red leotard-like garment, arms outstretched. The figure is rendered with bold, simplified lines, typical of Kirchner's Expressionist style. The background is a mix of white space and patches of blue and black ink, adding to the raw, immediate feel of the print. The composition is stark and direct, focusing on the figure's pose and expression. The limited colour palette and rough texture of the woodcut enhance the emotional intensity of the work.
