William Holman Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, is primarily recognised for his moralising and religious subjects. However, his later career included a series of coastal studies that demonstrate his meticulous approach to observation. Asparagus Island, located off the coast of Cornwall near Kynance Cove, provided the subject for this work.
